В прошедшем времени (the Past Simple Tense) используются две формы глагола to be:

• was, если подлежащее выражено существительным в единственном числе или I, he, she, it: She was surprised to see us;
• were, если оно представлено существительным во множественном числе или we, you, they: You were ill when we went to the party. 

1) The weather was fine yesterday. 2) It was warm and sunny. 3) My children were in the garden and my husband was at work. 4) There were many beautiful flowers. 5) She was not ill yesterday.
